22 December 2018 – News, Stories and Ideas to Make the World a Better Place

22 December 2018
WITADA’s Weekly Top 10: News, stories and ideas to make the world a better place.
In this week’s Top 10 we share some great ideas for xmas as well as take a look at climate change and how to live an anti-capitalist life!

1. Don’t be tempted by those Boxing Day sales or the need to overspend on gifts for loved ones! Living an ethical and green life might also mean challenging the capitalist life style. In this article a range of people share their strategies for doing just that!

2. Sir David Attenborough has made a presentation at the United Nations climate summit warning that the fate of the world is in the hands of our world leaders. “Attenborough said: “The world’s people have spoken. Time is running out. They want you, the decision-makers, to act now. Leaders of the world, you must lead. The continuation of civilisations and the natural world upon which we depend is in your hands.”

3. At xmas time as we exchange gifts with others it’s important to  ensure that any Aboriginal art you buy is authentic. We have talked about this issue previously with the high percentage of ‘fake’ Aboriginal art. The ACCC in Australian has been pursuing this issue and has recently taken action against one of the worst offenders.

4. Here is a wonderful picture essay about life on the land for a group of rangers from Lama Lama, a Cape York National Park. There’s a lot we can learn here.

5. Simon Black has some great ideas about how to talk to your friends and family about the climate crisis this xmas!

6. If you’re interested in a bit of high quality listening over the xmas break you might want to check out this Podcast from The Guardian Australia, Witch Hunt, which exams what comes after #MeToo.

7. And while we’re at it – this is a great podcast from Changemakers looking at the strategies used in the marriage equality campaign and how they might apply to future social action campaigns.

8. The Guardian has a guide to eating less meat in 2019! They argue that the environmental impact, including climate change, make veganism and vegetarianism the best way to go. We would like to add in respect for all living things as well – another of the many reasons to consider this option in 2019. There’s also some terrific recipes here to check out.

9. And with all that time on your hands now, check out this great TED talk from the wonderful Bruce Pascoe as he talks about the real history of Aboriginal Australians who were the first agriculturalists.

10. And as we come to the end of the year here are 10 good news stories for kids in 2018, including less child marriage, more kids in schools and lots of other cool stuff!

From all of us here at WITADA we wish you and those you love a peaceful, restful and joyful festive season. Look forward to your company again next week.
